Glycolic peels, which are referred to as a “lunchtime procedure,” boast a short duration and rapid recovery time. Glycolic peels are effective in removing superficial wrinkles, dry patches of skin, and acne scars while treating sun damage. Glycolic peels are also beneficial for patients with acne and rosacea because they make the skin more responsive to other treatments. To achieve optimal results with glycolic peels, several peels need to be performed.
With a glycolic peel, you can enjoy the benefits of a chemical peel without the long recovery times and side effects associated with deep peels. Dr. Warmuth will use a specific formula for your glycolic peel based on your skin condition and the results you’d like to achieve.
How It Works
Glycolic peels are made of glycolic acid, which is the best known of all alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). Concentrations of glcolic acid in glycolic peels range from 20% to 70%.
Glycolic acid is an effective skin exfoliant because of its high acidity and easy solubility. It goes under the damaged upper layers of the skin and destroys the “glue” that holds dead skin to the surface. The dead skin cells are sloughed off, resulting in smoother, more youthful skin. Glycolic peels also help to draw moisturizers into the newly exfoliated skin’s surface.
What to Expect
After just one glycolic peel, you will notice an improvement in your skin’s texture and appearance. After multiple peels, you’ll notice a significant improvement in the way your skin looks and feels. Glycolic peels are best performed regularly at one to two week intervals. Most patients see optimal results after a cycle of eight to ten peels followed by monthly or bi-weekly maintenance treatments.
