Sclerotherapy Treatment for Varicose & Spider Veins in Vineland & Elmer, NJ

Sclerotherapy is a virtually painless technique that is used to remove spider veins and varicose veins. During the procedure, a saline solution known as a sclerosant is injected directly into the affected veins, causing them to turn white and preventing blood from reentering the veins. Over time, the veins turn into scar tissue and fade from view.

What to Expect

You may experience mild discomfort when small veins are injected. When larger veins are injected, there may be a mild cramping sensation that lasts for one to two minutes. The entire procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Side effects include redness and bruising.

Results

With each injection session, as many as 50 to 80 percent of the injected veins can be eliminated. Generally, spider veins respond to sclerotherapy treatment within three to four months. The number of veins injected during a treatment session varies depending on the size and location of the veins, as well as on the patient’s medical condition. No lotion should be applied to the treatment area before the procedure, and compression stockings should be worn afterwards for support.

You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after undergoing treatment and you are encouraged to walk to speed healing. Although the treated veins won’t reappear, new veins may appear in their place over time, in which case, you can opt to receive further treatment. To maintain the results of sclerotherapy treatment, Dr. Warmuth may recommend that you undergo touch-up treatments every year or so.
